Social Determinants Of Health: Canadian Perspectives

Social Determinants Of Health: Canadian PerspectivesGenetics and traditional risk factors such as activity, diet and tobacco use are not the best predictors of whether we stay healthy or become ill. What, then, are the predictors of adult-onset diabetes, heart attacks or stroke, and many other diseases? Social determinants provide the answer. Social determinants of health are the socio-economic conditions that influence the health of individuals, communities and jurisdictions as a whole. These determinants also establish the extent to which a person possesses the physical, social and personal resources to identify and achieve personal aspirations, satisfy needs and cope with the environment. This perspective is the key to understanding patterns of health and illness in Canada today.Uniting top academics and high-profile experts from across the country, this contributed volume is the first of its kind published in Canada. It summarises how socio-economic factors affect the health of Canadians, surveys the current state of eleven social determinants of health across Canada and provides an analysis of how these determinants affect Canadians' health. In each case, the book explores what policy options would contribute to better health outcomes and how to ensure that these options are pursued.

An Ethnography of Stress: The Social Determinants of Health in Aboriginal Australia (Culture, Mind and Society)

An Ethnography of Stress: The Social Determinants of Health in Aboriginal Australia (Culture, Mind and Society)
This book examines the global issue of health inequality through an in-depth look at a remote Australian Aboriginal community characterized by a degree of premature morbidity and mortality similar to that in other disadvantaged populations. Its synthesis of cognitive anthropology with frameworks drawn from epidemiology, evolutionary theory, and social, psychological and biological sciences illuminates the actions, emotions and stresses of daily life. While this analysis implicates structures and processes of inequality in the genesis of ill health, its focus remains on the people who suffer, grieve and live with the dilemmas of an intercultural life.

Directions: Co-Determinants of Fate

Directions: Co-Determinants of FateIn order to avoid any misinterpretation of the phrase " indicators of fate", the book's title has been changed to read "Directions - Co-Determinants of Fate". And you, dear reader, will soon discover that this correctly defines the nature and purpose of the directions; for the directions, with their cosmic roots and in their co-determinantive capacity, are life companions along with many other circumstances, conditions and influences shaping human destiny.... The stars are not the dictators of human destiny, The stars are rather celestial signs Showing possibilities and bounds, time and tendency, Man himself is the controller of his fate. --- excerpts from book's Preface

The Status Syndrome: How Social Standing Affects Our Health and Longevity

The Status Syndrome: How Social Standing Affects Our Health and Longevity
Based on decades of his own research, a pioneering epidemiologist reveals the surprising factors behind who lives longer and why

You probably didn't realize that when you graduated from college you increased your lifespan, or that your co-worker who has a master's degree is more likely to live a longer and healthier life. Seemingly small social differences in education, job title, income, even the size of your house or apartment have a profound impact on your health.
For years we have focused merely on how advances in technology and genetics can extend our lives and cure disease. But as Sir Michael Marmot argues, we are looking at the issue backwards. Social inequalities are not a footnote to the real causes of ill health in industrialized countries; they are the cause. The psychological experience of inequality, Marmot shows, has a profound effect on our lives. And while this may be alarming, it also suggests a ray of hope. If we can understand these social inequalities, we can also mitigate their effects.
In this groundbreaking book, Marmot, an internationally renowned epidemiologist, marshals evidence from around the world and from nearly thirty years of his research to demonstrate that how much control you have over your life and the opportunities you have for full social participation are crucial for health, well-being, and longevity. Just as Bowling Alone changed the way we think about community in America, The Status Syndrome will change the way we think about our society and how we live our lives.

Social Epidemiology

Social EpidemiologyThe authors of this groundbreaking text define social epidemiology as the study of the social determinants of health, implying that an important goal of public health is to identify and address factors in the social environment that may be related to health outcomes. In the first systematic account of this field, they focus on the major social variables that influence health, including socioeconomic position, income distribution, race/ethnicity, gender, social networks/social support, social capital and community cohesion, work environment, life transitions, and affective psychological states. Individual chapters describe the conceptualization and measurement of each social variable, as well as the empirical evidence linking them to a broad range of mental, physical, and behavioral health outcomes. The volume draws on the expertise of an internationally renowned group of scholars, representing the diversity of disciplines relevant to this emerging field, from sociology and psychology to physiology and medicine. The approaches covered by the chapters span the range from formulating and testing hypotheses about the links between social conditions and health to designing and implementing interventions and social policies to improve population health. The challenge of persistent social inequalities in health across the globe makes this a timely publication. The book will be an indispensable introduction to the field for students, researchers, practitioners, and policy analysts.

Political and Economic Determinants of Population Health and Well-Being: Controversies and Developments (Policy, Politics, Health, and Medicine Series)

Political and Economic Determinants of Population Health and Well-Being: Controversies and Developments (Policy, Politics, Health, and Medicine Series)The field of social inequalities in health continues its vigorous growth in the early years of the 21st century. This volume, following in the footsteps of Vicente Navarro?s edited collection The Political Economy of Social Inequalities, is a compilation of recent contributions to the areas of social epidemiology, health disparities, health economics, and health services research. The overarching theme is to describe and explain the ever-growing health inequalities across social class, race, and gender, as well as neighborhood, city, region, country, and continent. The approach of this book is distinctly multi-, trans-, and interdisciplinary: the fields of public health, population health, epidemiology, economics, sociology, political science, philosophy, medicine, and history are all represented here.

Part I, on social policy, includes Navarro?s critique of Sen?s influential Development As Freedom, Sen?s own analysis of gender and development, a comparison of the consequences of Swedish and British labor market policies, and several analyses of the evolution of international economic inequalities. Part II centers on the contested concept of globalization, with an international empirical analysis of its consequences for global well-being over the last two decades, a description of growing health inequalities by income in the United States since the 1960s, and an account of the expansion of managed care in semiperipheral countries. Part III, on health policy, presents a critique of a controversial 2000 WHO report and two analyses of contemporary U.S. health policy. Part IV, on health care, provides international empirical evidence on the negative effects of privatization, in particular in hospitals, nursing homes, and health services utilization. Part V focuses on occupational health and labor unions, including the crucial role of unions in protecting worker?s safety and health. One chapter tells the story of New York?s legendary SEIU 1199; another addresses the neglected area of women?s occupational health; another provides dramatic case studies on violations of workers? freedom of association and their consequences. Part VI, on social capital versus class, gender, and race, deals with one of the most heated theoretical and empirical debates in contemporary social epidemiology. Most of the contributors provide arguments and data that challenge communitarian approaches to health disparities, focusing instead on political factors, welfare state provisions, and class, race, and gender inequalities as major sources of inequalities in health. Finally, Part VII addresses the role of ideology, theory, and research policy in the production and maintenance of social inequalities in health. Ideology is not usually seen as a social determinant of population health, but the contributors here show the role of ideology in shaping scientific views about race and health disparities, as well as the implicit understanding of determinants of health and disease. The final chapter presents a critical overview of recent ideological attempts at discrediting empirical research on health disparities and social epidemiology.

Why Are Some People Healthy and Others Not?: The Determinants of Health of Populations (Social Institutions and Social Change)

Each topical chapter in this volume crystallies the findings of a five-year study, under the auspices of the Population Health Program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, that probed the links between social hierarchy, the “macroenvironmental” factors in illness patterns, the quality of the “microenvironmental,” and other determinants of health. In its aggregate, this volume will prove essential to an understanding of the underlying public health issues for the next several decades.

Determinants of Delivery Care In Dhaka, Bangladesh: Quantifying the determinants of delivery care in Dhaka: A nested case control ctudy

Determinants of Delivery Care In Dhaka, Bangladesh: Quantifying the determinants of delivery care in Dhaka: A nested case control ctudyBangladesh has a high maternal mortality rate of 300/100,000 live births (WHO, 2004). Though skilled birth attendants working in hygienic conditions can reduce this high maternal mortality rate through safe delivery practices, there is, gross underutilization of the available health facilities. This book investigates a diverse set of determinants of place of delivery care using the behavior model of Andersen and Newman (Baldo, 2001). After controlling for multiple factors in logistic regression, antenatal care (ANC) attendance, age, education, monthly expenditure and husbands' occupation retained a significant association with place of delivery. ANC was the most important determinant of delivery care from the logistic regression model. These findings suggest that enabling more women to get better antenatal care, ensuring that all women have a minimum of primary education, reducing the total fertility rate and reducing teenage pregnancies may result in an increased number of hospital deliveries.

Rethinking Social Epidemiology: Towards a Science of Change

Rethinking Social Epidemiology: Towards a Science of ChangeTo date, much of the empirical work in social epidemiology has demonstrated the existence of health inequalities along a number of axes of social differentiation. However, this research, in isolation, will not inform effective solutions to health inequalities. Rethinking Social Epidemiology provides an expanded vision of social epidemiology as a science of change, one that seeks to better address key questions related to both the causes of social inequalities in health (problem-focused research) as well as the implementation of interventions to alleviate conditions of marginalization and poverty (solution-focused research). This book is ideally suited for emerging and practicing social epidemiologists as well as graduate students and health professionals in related disciplines.

Determinants of Minority Mental Health and Wellness

Determinants of Minority Mental Health and WellnessThere have been numerous books published relating to minority mental health. Most of these have approached the topic from either of two perspectives. They may focus on specific minority populations and within each such section, discuss the mental illnesses affecting that population and the risk factors for mental illness. Alternatively, books have been organized around specific mental illness diagnoses and within each such discussion, have addressed the specific illness with reference to minority populations. This proposed text utilizes a completely different approach. First, we focus on minority mental health and wellness and, as such, addresses not only recognized risk factors for mental illness within specific minority populations, but also the protective factors and strategies to prevent mental illness. Second, the book will be organized around the determinants of mental health and wellness, using as a foundation Bronfenbrenner’s model that considers determinants of health at the macrosocial, exosystemic, microsystemic (e.g., family) and ontogenic (individual) levels.

Targeted Therapies in Cancer: Myth or Reality? (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology)

Targeted Therapies in Cancer: Myth or Reality? (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology)

In September 2005 an International Meeting on Targeted Therapies in Cancer: Myth or Reality was held in Milan. This successful Meeting was intended to represent a forum for scientists and clinicians working in cancer drug discovery and therapy to share their reflections and experiences on how the paradigm shift from empiricism to molecular targeted therapies is contributing to the translation of basic knowledge into new therapies for cancer patients. This book collects the contributions given by scientists and clinicians, from Academia and Industry, who participated to this Meeting.

We hope that this book contributes to improve our approach to cancer drug discovery and, ultimately, to find new, more efficacious and better tolerated drugs for cancer patients. It provides an overview of diverse approaches ranging from drug discovery to cellular therapy. Although this change in paradigm has been useful, its entry into the clinical arena was associates with unforeseen problems including the emergence of resistance, unexpected side effects and failures. Time is therefore ripe for a critical cultural reflection on the state of the art, prospects and limitations. Ultimately, is targeted therapy in cancer a myth or a reality?

Unhealthy Societies: The Afflictions of Inequality

Unhealthy Societies: The Afflictions of InequalityAmong the developed countries it is not the richest societies which have the best health, but those which have the smallest income differences between rich and poor. Inequality and relative poverty have absolute effects: they increase death rates. But why? How can smaller income differences raise average life expectancy?
Using examples from the USA, Britain, Japan and Eastern Europe, and bringing together evidence from the social and medical sciences, Unhealthy Socities provides the explanation. Healthy, egalitarian societies are more socially cohesive. They have a stronger community life and suffer fewer of the corrosive effects of inequality. As well as inequality weakening the social fabric, damaging health and increasing crime rates, Unhealthy Societies shows that social cohesion is crucial to the quality of life.
The contrast between the material success and social failure of modern societies marks an imbalance which needs attention. The relationship between health and equality suggests that important social needs will go unmet without a larger measure of social and distributive justice. This path-breaking book is essential reading for health psychologists, sociologists, welfare economists, social policy analysts and all those concerned with the future of developed societies.

Psychology of Physical Activity: Determinants, Well-Being and Interventions

Psychology of Physical Activity: Determinants, Well-Being and Interventions

As modern lifestyles offer ever more opportunities for a sedentary existence, physical activity has become, for many, a marginal aspect of life. Too little physical activity is linked to common, often serious, health problems, and although this link is now widely acknowledged, levels of sedentary behaviour continue to increase throughout western society. Psychology of Physical Activity, 2nd Edition addresses this concern, bringing together a wealth of up to date information about exercise behaviour including:

  • motivation and psychological factors associated with activity or inactivity
  • the psychological outcomes of exercising including the 'feel–good' factor
  • understanding specific clinical populations
  • interventions and applied practice in the psychology of physical activity
  • current trends and future directions in research and practice.

Updated to reflect new findings and research directions, this new edition includes full textbook features, and is accompanied by a dedicated website providing lecturers and students with extensive support materials, including powerpoint slides and student MCQ's.

Closing the Gap in a Generation: Health Equity through Action on the Social Determinants of Health: Final Report of the Commission on Social Determinants of Health

Closing the Gap in a Generation: Health Equity through Action on the Social Determinants of Health: Final Report of the Commission on Social Determinants of HealthThe Final Report of the Commission on Social Determinants of Health sets out key areas–of daily living conditions and of the underlying structural drivers that influence them–in which action is needed. It provides analysis of social determinants of health and concrete examples of actions that have proven effective in improving health and health equity in countries at all levels of socioeconomic development.

Part 1 lays out the rationale for a global movement to advance health equity through action on the social determinants of health. Part 2 outlines the approach the Commission took to evidence, and to the indispensable value of acknowledging and using the rich diversity of different types of knowledge. Parts 3, 4, and 5 set out in more detail the Commission’s findings and recommendations. Part 6, finally, reprises the global networks–the regional connections to civil society worldwide, the growing caucus of country partners taking the social determinants of health agenda forward, the vital research agendas, and the opportunities for change at the level of global governance and global institutions–that the Commission has built and on which the future of a global movement for health equity will depend.

Social Determinants of Health

Social Determinants of HealthSocial Determinants of Health, 2E gives an authoritative overview of the social and economic factors which are known to be the most powerful determinants of population health in modern societies. Written by acknowledged experts in each field, it provides accessible summaries of the scientific justification for isolating different aspects of social and economic life as the primary determinants of a population's health.

The new edition takes account of the most recent research and also includes additional chapters on ethnicity and health, sexual behaviors, the elderly, housing and neighborhoods.

Recognition of the power of socioeconomic factors as determinants of health came initially from research on health inequalities. This has led to a view of health as not simply about individual behavior or exposure to risk, but how the socially and economically structured way of life of a population shapes its health. Thus exercise and accidents as as much about a society's transport system as about individual decisions; and the nation's diet involves agriculture, food manufacture, retailing, and personal incomes as much as individual choice. But a major new element in the picture we have developed is the importance of the social, or psycho-social, environment to health. For example, health in the workplace for most employees - certainly for office workers - is less a matter of exposure to physical health hazards as of the social envrionment, of how supportive it is, whether people have control over their work, whether their jobs are secure. A similar picture emerges in other areas ranging from the health importance of the emotional envrionment in early childhood to the need for more socially cohesive communities.

Social Determinants of Health, 2E should be read by those interested in the wellbeing of modern societies. It is a must for public health professionals, for health promotion specialists, and for people working in the many fields of public policy which we now know make such an important contribution to health.
